DOMINIC BEHAN
It is with a sense of real privilege that I set about bringing this collection of songs together, privilege tinged with sadness since both targets of my respect & gratitude are gone from us. I have long wanted to make an album of the songs of Dominic Behan whom I first met in 1965 with poet, songwriter & activist Morris Blythman. The occasion was a concert in Glasgow in which Dominic was appearing & when he asked after a guitar accompanist for show, Morris volunteered me in. That was the start of yet another learning process for me for when Dominic & wife Josephine came to live in Lanarkshire I had the opportunity to play guitar & perform new songs on tape for sending off as illustrations for a forthcoming work. During that time it was enough for me simply to hang out in the company of writers & absorb their work for performances of my own, never thinking I should write for myself. Dominic urged me to drop that notion fast; he had the patience to encourage me that a good way to start might be to take traditional songs & excise any clunky archaic language in favour of decent communication with an audience – even pointing out (to the horror of some!) that books can't always be relied on for accuracy through misprint & sometimes plain guess work on the part of an editor. NB, today spellcheck can bring about the same anomalies.
For that reason I have resisted recording every DB song in this set (a myna bird could do that!) in favour of including some songs that we discussed at length; they were favourites of his & as it turns out, favourites of “Paddy” Bort to whom I also respectfully acknowledge my gratitude.

PADDY BORT

At the time we met, Paddy was running, among so many other things The Wee Folk Club in Edinburgh & part of my gratitude extends to the fact that he overcame some personal prejudice against “...tartan-clad folk entertainers...” assisted, I don`t doubt, by the persuasive verbal ear bashing of Royal Oak hotel owner Sandra (Adams) with whom I had worked on the wider entertainment scene. Through Paddy, I went on to perform at other venues that might otherwise have been closed to me - I never gave up on expressing my gratitude to Paddy for his forbearance & any disagreements we might have had thereafter were happily written off as mere difference of taste or, “...it would be a dull world if we were all the same...”.
